The compliment method Learn how to date again, one compliment at a time.

People are not bad at dating. They are out of practice at being kind to a stranger's face. Learn how to engage anyone in under a minute, give and take a compliment, present yourself, mind your manners and handle a soft rejection, then practice it for real at a Las Vegas speed dating night.

The compliment method

A connection is built in the first sixty seconds.

Most dating advice tells you what to say. The compliment method teaches you how to make a stranger feel seen, and how to let them do the same for you. Giving a compliment is a skill. Receiving one without deflecting is a harder skill. Learn both and you will never sit through an awkward date again.

Dawn Weir is a stand-up comedian, radio host and the author of Dawn Compliments the World. She teaches the method live at the start of every speed dating night in Las Vegas, and then you practice it all evening long.

Want a compliment a day while you practice? Compliments for Change gives you one, and lets you send one.

  1. Notice

Look for the choice, not the feature. Anyone can be told they have nice eyes. Almost nobody gets told the thing they decided on purpose.

  2. Name it

Say it plainly and say it once. Specific beats flattering every time, and it gives the other person something real to answer.

  3. Receive it

No deflecting, no joke, no returning it out of politeness. Take the compliment, hold it, then ask them something back.

  4. Engage

One question that cannot be answered with yes or no. That is the whole trick, and it is why our rooms sound different from every other speed dating night.

The Dating Skills Test · about 5 minutes

How good are you at dating, really?

24 questions, from introducing yourself to asking someone out to marriage. Built on relationship research and Dawn's compliment method, for every age. You get a score out of 100, your strongest and weakest areas, and the best answers explained.

For fun and learning, not a clinical assessment.

What nobody else teaches

Present yourself, mind your manners, and master the soft rejection.

Compliments are only the start. At every night Dawn also covers how to present yourself (first impressions, eye contact, and walking into a room like you belong there), a few manners that never go out of style, and the soft rejection: a kind, simple way to say no, and to hear no, so nobody leaves embarrassed. It is all explained during the night, and everybody practices it out loud, together.

We guarantee you will leave with information you will use for the rest of your life: on dates, at work, with friends and with family.

Your cheat sheet

At our first night, guests took notes on their phones and asked for it in writing. So now every gift bag includes a cheat sheet with the whole method on it.

Dating tips that work

Call, do not text.

At our nights you write their number on your card yourself, the way people did it before the apps. The next day you call. Ask how they are. Listen to how they say it. Then make a real date, and do it again until you are down to that one special person.

What if they say no? Then you got your answer in one phone call instead of three weeks of wondering, and that is a win. Not every connection is a forever love. Plenty of them are a forever friend, and you can never have too many of those.

Questions

Learning to date, answered.

Can I really learn how to date at a speed dating night?
Yes. The first part of every night is the compliment lesson, taught out loud with the whole room practicing together. Then you use it on 12 to 15 real dates.
What if I have never done this before?
Neither has most of the room. That is exactly why the lesson comes before the dating.
